External Memory Card Support

One of the features suggested by our users is external memory card support. For various reasons, we are not yet able to support this, but we hope to in the future. However, the main issue is that programs and databases stored on the external card will not be synchronized using the hotsync conduit. This is due to the fact that the program does not reside in internal RAM. Another issue is that the files must be moved from external memory to internal RAM before the program can be run, and then moved back after the program exits. This adds additional delays to the program startup and shutdown times. External memory is better suited to applications and data files that will not be modified.

However, we have looked at some of the available 3rd party applications that could be used to store our software on external memory cards. In most cases, the software would need to be moved back to internal RAM whenever the user wanted that application to hotsync properly. We would also recommend moving the application and data back to internal RAM before installing any software updates for that application. That being said, here are three possible options. We do not endorse or guarantee the performance of any of these applications.

  1. PowerRUN (Version 1.3) $15.00
Install PowerRUN, and then tap the PowerRUN icon to start PowerRUN. Select the application in the list that you would like to move to external memory, then tap Move. Wait for the program and data files to be moved to the external card. A shortcut icon, with an asterisk (*) at the end of the program name, will be added to allow the program to be started as usual. When starting the application, it will now take a few moments as the files are moved back to internal RAM so that the software will run. When you want to hotsync that application, you will need to temporarily move it back to internal RAM using PowerRUN.

  2. MagicLink (Version 1.08) $14.95
Install MagicLink, and then tap the MagicLink icon to start MagicLink. Select the application the list that you would like to move to external memory. A shortcut icon will be added to allow the program to be started as usual. When starting the application, it will now take a few moments as the files are moved back to internal RAM so that the software will run. When you want to hotsync that application, you will need to temporarily move it back to internal RAM using MagicLink. You can also leave the PDB (data files) in RAM and only move the program file - this will allow hotsync to still work.

  3. ZLauncher (Version 5.00) $19.95
Install ZLauncher, and then tap the ZLauncher icon to start ZLauncher. Tap and hold the application's icon that you would like to move to external memory, then tap Move to Card from the popup menu. Wait for the program and data files to be moved to the external card. A shortcut icon, with an asterisk (*) at the end of the program name, will be added to allow the program to be started as usual. When starting the application, it will now take a few moments as the files are moved back to internal RAM so that the software will run. When you want to hotsync that application, you will need to temporarily move it back to internal RAM using the same tap and hold procedure on the shortcut icon.

  4. LauncherX (Version 1.1) $19.95
Install LauncherX, and then tap the LauncherX icon to start LauncherX. Tap and drag the application's icon that you would like to move to external memory down to the Card gadget icon, then tap Move to Card from the popup menu. Wait for the program (not data) file to be moved to the external card. Again, tap and drag the application's icon a second time to the Card gadget icon, then tap Create Shortcut from the popup menu. Tap the shortcut icon to start the application. Note that with LauncherX, only the program is moved to the external card, not the data files. This does allow the hotsync process to work properly, as long as the shortcut was created. However, less space will be saved in internal RAM, since only the program file (about 250k) is moved to external memory.

We hope that these options will improve the usefulness of our software for your particular situation. We are continuing to look at native memory card support. If you have another idea or suggestion related to external memory cards that you would like to share, please feel free to email us.
